Beautiful Desolation Sound, BC will be getting a large shoreline cleanup effort this summer

Fishing for Plastic is celebrating today after being named a recipient of funding from the Clean Coast Clean Water Initiative; a project to clear B.C shores of marine debris and derelict vessels. Fishing for Plastic will be working with the Ocean Legacy Foundation, Let’s Talk Trash, Tla’amin Nation, Denman Island Marine Stewards, K'ómoks First Nation, Lasqueti Shoreline Debris Initiative, the Klahoose First Nations and Nicholas Sonntag Marine Education Centre to clean approximately 400 kilometres of coastline and remove waste in the  čɛʔ/Central Salish Sea area. Thanks to the recent funding announcement for the Clean Coast Clean Waters from the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.

A key part of this project will also be sorting as much of that debris and having it reach appropriate recyclable facilities, as opposed to landfills. The OLF Recycling Centre is expected to receive upwards of 300 tonnes of beach waste which they will be converting into recyclable plastic.

“The Clean Coast Clean Waters Initiative is an historical moment for coastal communities and the environment not only in the Province of British Columbia but has set a precedence for Canada. Ocean Legacy is thrilled and grateful to have this opportunity to work with communities in building economic opportunities to create cleaner oceans and provide innovative recycling opportunities for ocean plastics.” - Chloe Dubois, Ocean Legacy Foundation

Fishing for Plastic clean-ups will begin in May and continue until the end of July taking place in Desolation Sound, British Columbia. Marine debris sorting is anticipated to take place at the Ocean Legacy Recycling Centre from July to October. For more information contact  angela@fishingforplastic.com
